CIAMA TASKS MANUFACTURERS ON PROFESSIONALISM IN OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT

The Director General of The Certified Institute of Applied Management And Administration (CIAMA), Dr Olaniyi Opanuga has blamed slow pace of growth of indigenous manufacturing on the inability of local manufacturers to develop professional competencies in production and operations management.

Opanuga made this assertion in a lecture organized for Managers on the Professional Advanced Diploma (PAD) Programme by the College of Production & Operations  Management (COPOM) in Ogba Industrial Estate, Ikeja, Lagos recently. He said many manufacturing companies were too docile concerning professional education, training and development of their production workers.

“Without training people in production and operations through the relevant professional institutions such as COPOM how do you increase productivity or improve quality? Where do you expect them to learn the right ethics and values from? How do you compete favourably with world class organizations?” he asked.

He urged Nigerian manufacturers to take the professional application of management in production and operations seriously by encouraging their managers, supervisors and factory workers to undergo COPOM Certification training. “This, they can do without disruption to their work”, he said.

“Continuous training and education of production and operations managers, supervisors and workers constitute a rewarding investment that will translate into reduction in waste level, lower cost of operations, better quality and improved customer service, leading to greater competitiveness and higher profitability”, he added.
